The idea behind this is simple. The higher the divergence of ideas at the start, the greater the likelihood of achieving the ultimate top innovation.
Brainstorming is the classic method for this divergent creative phase. To ensure that many, original, and useful ideas emerge from this technique, the team and coach should consider the following tips:
- No idea is too crazy, and more is better. So write down as many and as wild ideas as possible. This is how the best solutions are born.
- Do not criticize/comment on ideas mentioned. You will have the opportunity to do so after the idea round.
- Let yourself be inspired by mentioned ideas and develop them further.
- Ideas must be formulated in a self-explanatory way. Even outsiders should understand what is meant.
- Use alternative formulations of "How might we questions," e.g., ambitious or specific HMW formulations, to switch perspectives.
- Good coaches also use trigger words and other stimuli to get your creativity going.
